What is an Epoxy River Table?
An epoxy river table is made from two live-edge wood slabs with a channel of clear (or coloured) epoxy resin between them, mimicking the look of a flowing river. The transparent epoxy contrasts beautifully with the natural wood grain, creating a stunning piece of furniture.
River tables are used as dining tables, coffee tables, office desks, and even bar tops across India. With the right epoxy resin and technique, anyone can make one at home or in a workshop.
What You Need — Materials List
- Two live-edge wood slabs — sheesham, teak, mango, or acacia (locally available in India)
- Bondone Clear Cast epoxy resin — 3:1 ratio, long pot life, crystal clear
- Melamine-coated MDF or plywood — for building the mould
- Silicone sealant — to seal mould joints
- Epoxy pigment or alcohol ink — optional, for coloured rivers
- Digital weighing scale — essential for accurate mixing
- Mixing containers and wooden sticks
- Orbital sander + sandpaper (80 to 3000 grit)
- Heat gun or butane torch — to remove bubbles
- Nitrile gloves and safety goggles
For a standard 6ft dining river table, you will need approximately 4–6kg of mixed epoxy. The Bondone Clear Cast 12kg large set (₹5,950) from Si Epoxy Adhesives is perfect for a full river table pour with some leftover for touch-ups.
Step-by-Step: How to Make an Epoxy River Table
Select and Dry Your Wood
Choose two matching live-edge slabs from the same tree for a natural look. The moisture content must be below 12% — use a moisture meter before starting. Kiln-dried Indian hardwoods like sheesham (Indian rosewood), teak, or mango wood are ideal. High moisture causes the epoxy to become cloudy or crack during cure.
Build Your Mould
Construct a mould slightly larger than your table from melamine-coated MDF. The melamine surface prevents epoxy from bonding to the mould. Apply silicone sealant along all interior joints and corners. Let the silicone cure fully for 24 hours before pouring — any gaps will cause leaks and waste expensive resin.
Place the Wood and Apply a Seal Coat
Position your slabs inside the mould, leaving a gap of 8–15cm for the river. Secure them with clamps or screws through the mould base. Apply a thin seal coat of epoxy over all wood surfaces — especially the live edges and any cracks. This seals air pockets in the wood grain that would otherwise rise as bubbles through your main pour. Let the seal coat cure for 6–8 hours.
Mix and Pour the Epoxy
Weigh Bondone Clear Cast at exactly 3 parts resin to 1 part hardener by weight using your digital scale. Mix slowly for 5 minutes, scraping the sides and bottom of the container. If using pigment or alcohol ink, add it now and mix gently. Pour slowly from low height along one edge to minimise bubble formation. For depths over 25mm, pour in two layers 12 hours apart to prevent overheating.
Remove Bubbles
Within 10 minutes of pouring, pass a heat gun or butane torch briefly over the surface — the heat causes bubbles to pop instantly. Keep the torch or gun moving continuously; holding it in one spot can scorch the epoxy. Cover the mould loosely with cardboard to keep dust off during the 48–72 hour cure. Do not cover with plastic as it can stick to the surface.
Demould and Flatten
After 48–72 hours, carefully remove the mould panels. Use a router sled or belt sander to flatten both the top and bottom surfaces until they are perfectly level. Progress through sandpaper grits: 80 → 120 → 180 → 240 → 400 → 800 → 1500 → 3000. This is the most time-consuming step but gives the final glass-like finish.
Apply Final Finish and Attach Legs
Apply a thin flood coat of fresh epoxy over the top surface for a deep gloss finish. Alternatively, apply a hardwax oil finish on the wood portions for a more natural satin look. Once fully cured (7 days for full hardness), attach hairpin legs, steel tube legs, or a custom metal base to complete your river table.
Avoid pouring epoxy when humidity is above 65%. High humidity causes surface blush (white haze), slows curing, and can make the finish cloudy. The best months to work with epoxy in India are October to March. If working in summer or monsoon, use an air-conditioned room.

Common River Table Mistakes to Avoid
- Wet wood: Always check moisture content. Wet wood is the #1 cause of cloudy epoxy in India.
- Wrong mixing ratio: Always measure by weight, never by volume. Even a small error causes a sticky, uncured river.
- Pouring too deep in one shot: Pours deeper than 25mm generate too much heat and can crack or yellow. Always pour in layers.
- Not sealing the mould: Any gap in silicone will cause a leak. Check every joint before pouring.
- Sanding too soon: Wait a full 48 hours before demoulding and at least 72 hours before sanding.
- Working in high humidity: If you see a white haze on the surface, humidity is too high. Move to an air-conditioned space.
