01What It Is

Not epoxy. Not threadlocker. An instant adhesive built for plastics and rubbers.

Loctite 406 by Henkel is a low-viscosity ethyl cyanoacrylate instant adhesive — the same chemistry family as everyday superglue, but engineered for production. It is a transparent, one-part liquid that cures on contact with surface moisture, fixtures in under 5 seconds on most plastics and elastomers, and is qualified to A-A-3097.

Fixtures in seconds

Under 5 seconds on aluminum, neoprene, nitrile, ABS, PVC, and phenolic at 22°C and 50% RH. Degreased steel takes 20–45 seconds.

Bonds plastics & rubbers

Formulated for plastics and elastomers with low surface energy. ABS, PVC, polycarbonate, nitrile, neoprene, phenolic — one product covers them all.

One part, no mixing

Low viscosity lets it flow into close-fitting joints and form a thin bond line. Cure is driven by humidity — 40–60% RH at 22°C gives the fastest set.

08Quick Answer

Straight Answers

What is the difference between Loctite 406 and a general-purpose superglue?

406 is a production-grade ethyl cyanoacrylate, qualified to A-A-3097, with controlled viscosity (12–22 mPa·s) and documented strength on engineering plastics. General-purpose tubes vary batch to batch, bond unpredictably on low-energy plastics, and have no published fixture times. 406 gives you a known fixture time for every substrate — under 5 seconds on ABS, PVC, and nitrile, 20–45 seconds on steel — so production schedules can rely on it.

How strong is Loctite 406 and how fast does it cure?

15.5 N/mm² (2,250 psi) is the lap shear strength on grit-blasted steel per ISO 4587 after 24 hours at 22°C. On plastics, joints often fail in the substrate first — ABS block shear reaches 23.7 N/mm². Fixture time at 22°C and 50% RH is under 5 seconds on most plastics and rubbers, 10–20 seconds on polycarbonate, and 20–45 seconds on degreased steel. Full strength develops in 24–72 hours.

How much does Loctite 406 cost in India?

₹234 incl GST is the price for a standard 20 ml pack from our Ghaziabad warehouse, delivered PAN India. Bulk cartons and repeat supply contracts are priced on request — WhatsApp for the current bulk rate and stock position. Shipping charges apply on all orders. UPI, bank transfer, or credit card invoice via Razorpay — no COD.

09How To Use

Application Guide

1

Clean both surfaces

Clean the surfaces with a Loctite solvent or degreaser and let them dry. On low-energy plastics, apply Loctite 770 primer for a stronger initial bond.

2

Optional activator

If fixturing is too slow, apply activator to one surface and let it dry. Do not use activator on primed surfaces.

3

Apply one drop

Apply the adhesive to one surface only. Low viscosity spreads into a thin, even bond line — a single drop covers close-fitting joints.

4

Assemble within seconds

Assemble the parts immediately — within a few seconds. Move parts into final position before the bond starts to set.

5

Fillet curing

For gap-filling or very fast fixturing, apply activator to the assembled joint after bonding. The activator wicks into the bond line and cures it.

6

Clamp and wait

Hold or clamp the parts until the bond reaches handling strength. Full strength develops in 24–72 hours at 22°C and 40–60% RH.

"Most instant adhesives are fine until you hit a low-energy plastic — then they let go. 406 is the one I keep on the shelf because the fixture time is documented for ABS, PVC, and nitrile, not just for metal."

10FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Loctite 406?

Loctite 406 is an instant adhesive (cyanoacrylate) by Henkel, formulated to bond plastics, rubber, and metals with very fast fixturing. It is a transparent, low-viscosity, one-part liquid that cures on contact with moisture in the air, and it is qualified to A-A-3097.

Do I need to mix Loctite 406?

No. It is a one-part ethyl cyanoacrylate. No mixing is required — it cures by reacting with humidity in the air, so apply it straight from the bottle and assemble the parts within seconds.

What does Loctite 406 look like?

It is a transparent, colorless to straw-colored liquid with low viscosity. The low viscosity lets it flow into close-fitting joints and spread into a thin bond line, which cures fastest.

How strong is Loctite 406?

Lap shear strength per ISO 4587 after 24 hours at 22°C: 15.5 N/mm² on grit-blasted steel, 12 N/mm² on etched aluminum, 8.8 N/mm² on ABS, 9.1 N/mm² on polycarbonate. Block shear on ABS reaches 23.7 N/mm² — joints there fail in the plastic itself, not the bond.

How fast does Loctite 406 cure?

It fixtures in under 5 seconds on aluminum, neoprene, nitrile rubber, ABS, PVC, and phenolic at 22°C and 50% RH. Degreased steel takes 20–45 seconds and polycarbonate 10–20 seconds. Full strength develops in 24 hours, and the fastest cure happens at 40–60% RH.

Does Loctite 406 work on polycarbonate?

Yes. Loctite 406 fixtures on polycarbonate in 10–20 seconds and gives 9.1 N/mm² lap shear strength per ISO 4587. It retains 85–100% of that strength in air and at 98% RH, 40°C. An activator speeds up the cure when you need faster handling.

How should I store Loctite 406?

Store in the unopened container in a dry location. The optimum storage temperature is 2°C to 8°C — refrigerated. Storage below 2°C or above 8°C can adversely affect product properties. Do not return used product to the original container.

Where should I not use Loctite 406?

It is not recommended for use in pure oxygen or oxygen-rich systems, and should not be used as a sealant for chlorine or strong oxidizing products. Clean both surfaces first for the strongest, most consistent bond.

How do I get the best bond strength from Loctite 406?

Clean both surfaces with a Loctite solvent or degreaser and let them dry, keep the bond line thin, hold the joint at 40–60% RH and 22°C, and clamp the parts until fixtured. Allow 24–72 hours for full cure. Loctite 770 primer helps on low-energy plastics.
